Lots of chat about it so I figured we should make a topic.
Once again, when it is on Cots, that is the annual breakdown we will use. If it gets to tag time and cots still has no information then Ty will step in.
But kids, learn to hit and pitch lol. 700mm good lord.

680M is deferred money. He's only getting paid $2m/year.

No way the PA or MLB approve that. That is too far nuts.
There is NO way that Chin Music has more coherent back loading rules than MLB lol

There is a clear provision in MLB and union agreement that they can’t challenge deferred money. Monster break for Angels.

The issue I think remains though, His salary is still 70m/year. He just gets paid for it later.

If it gets to chin music at 2M for 10 years (which wouldn't be legal in any other way of getting a contract here besides franchising someone - 6 year max for us) then it is the single biggest competitive advantage / asset this league will ever see.
His contracts so far: 2018 - 1 year 58.3M (won in free agency by LAA) Franchised tag in the offseason 2019 - 1 year 650k Franchised tag in the offseason 2020 - 1 year 400k Franchised tag in the offseason - signed real life 2 year extension 2021 - 1 year 3M 2022 - 5.5M Franchised tag in the offseason 2023 - 30M Franchised tag in the offseason 2024-2033 - 2M
5 tags, 117M ish, 16 years 7.3M-ish AAS that is/was severely front loaded.

So do we use Sportac Base Salary or Adjusted Salary? This is uncharted territory.

Oh and so far he has been the ROY, and 2x MVP within 6 years.
And he pitches at a Cy Young level lol

So do we use Sportac Base Salary or Adjusted Salary? This is uncharted territory. Cots contracts has always been our bible. Currently it still lists
"10 years/$700M (2024-33) signed by LA Dodgers as a free agent 12/23 contract includes significant deferrals"
So nothing official yet. But they are historically the most accurate I think and were around well before spotrac.

I think it would be his base salary for that year, definitely going to be interesting. If he gets Ohtani for 2m/year for 10 years (I don't think it will be the case), would be crazy value.

Actually COTS states 10/$46m which I can see as fair

We’ve always gone by the bold number on Cots, never by deferred amounts. It’s the only way to do it without having to worry about the fuzzy math that they can do with contracts. It says $700m over 10 years, $70m annually.
Going by their spreadsheet numbers they even have it listed as estimated. Same with Betts and Freeman for the Dodgers. We can’t have contracts in here as estimates.

Yeah, as cots currently has it, I would assume its 70M.
"24-33: $70M annually, with $68M deferred each year"
This is the line that matters. Ty will make a ruling of course, but I would imagine this is the line that ends up mattering most depending how Ty wants to interpret it.

So, Ohtani is only taking 2 Mil a year and California will get at least half.
What's left isn't enough to cover my bar tab and bookie.

I agree with the $70M reflected in bold in COT's. It is what we have always used.

What's left isn't enough to cover my bar tab and bookie. apparently, Cali only getting the tax on $20 he's actually getting paid. If he retires/leaves California once those deferred payments start... he doesn't have to pay california tax on the 680M he's owed. He might just go back to Japan and skirt on some of those taxes.

Still have to pay taxes if you move abroad. Source - lived abroad, had to pay taxes. Best bet to avoid income tax is to establish residence in a tax free state like Texas or NH and just take the federal income taxes alone. Tax rate in Japan is 45%, here its 37%.
Better yet, just move to some tax haven like Monaco or Andorra.

Looks like the Ohtani contract is $28,216,944 per year all 10 years.
What the shit. I want to defer Lindor and Trout for an additional 10 years.
I'll be around til I'm 90.

Hey, I'm trying to figure out how general contracts are reflected in Cot's
The only numbers that matter are the dollar values next to the year. We will not honor Player Options, Mutual Options, Vesting Options, Buyouts, or Bonuses.
I saw something about "we always use the bold number". Does the league normally go off the Payroll - Salaries plus pro-rated signing bonuses" section or the Competitive Balance Tax Payroll - Average Annual Value section?
