At the end of the year, if a player’s contract expires he immediately becomes a FA and cannot be traded without a tag.
To protect against the loss of all free agents in a particular calendar year, a GM will be granted to ability to name Franchise and Restricted Players. Please refer to the "Salary Cap" section to know how many of these tags your team owns. You will also be able to protect all qualified "minor league" players and also be allowed to protect your qualified "prospect" players as well. Prospect players are defined as players who are engaged in the 4 year Prospect status.
A tag can only be used when a contract has expired, absent one exception. A player under PP can be tagged in any year. That is because a player under PP is under a series of renewable one year contracts. A GM can choose to forego PP status in favor of a Restricted Tag and a Franchise Tag.
Franchise Tag
A franchise tag attached to a player means that player receives his contract that he is paid in MLB. Chin Music uses Cot’s , for all contracts.
You cannot obtain PP through the use of a tag. Using a franchise tag for a player who would otherwise be eligible for PP, only means that said player gets their current MLB contract.
If a player tagged with a franchise tag's real life contract changes between the time tags lock and opening day, the owner may choose which contract to get in chin music.
If the player is involved in any Chin Music transaction (trade, drop, or otherwise) then their contract is locked in at what it was at the time of the transaction.
Once the tagged player signs his alternate contract in real life, the Chin Music owner has 72 hours to decide on which contract they want. If no decision is made within 72 hours, the original contract (not the new one signed in real life) stands. It is possible that the 27 hour decision window runs past opening day (i.e. tagged player X signs his extension opening day eve, Chin Music owner will still have 72 hours to choose)
Restricted Tags
A restricted tag allows a GM to match the highest bid received in RFA bidding. Please see Restricted FA.
Prospects are on Yearly Renewable Contracts.
Any player that is a prospect or under PP, has a one year deal that is renewable at the GMs discretion. The league operates under the assumption that all prospects not released will have their contract renewed. This process is meant to imitate team control at the ML level.
Retirement & Career Ending Injuries
Retirement should a player that is under a Chin Music contract retire due to old age, the team that owns that contract is still obligated to pay him that contract. This will prevent GM's from offering long and backloaded contracts to older veterans.
If a player decides to player in Japan or elsewhere, his contract remains in effect. Not being good enough or not wanting to play in MLB is not reason for a contract to be voided.
Under some extremely rare circumstances, a player will suffer an injury that prevents him from continuing with his career. The Commsisioners have the discretion to void a contract in such a case. Generally, a contract wll not be voided absent extreme circumstances. An example of such a case, is Daryl Kile, Nick Adenhart, or Ryan Westmoreland. As a general rule, a baseball injury is not grounds for voiding a contract.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact the League Office.
