Over the past few days the League Office has exchanged upwards of 40 PMs trying to find a fair solution to the question of "what happens when a franchise tagged guy signs an extension after he signed an arbitration contract?" After review, I present to you the new and official rule for the .01% of players that this applies to...
"If a player tagged with a franchise tag's real life contract changes between the time tags lock and opening day, the owner may choose which contract to get in chin music.
If the player is involved in any Chin Music transaction (trade, drop, or otherwise) then their contract is locked in at what it was at the time of the transaction.
Once the tagged player signs his alternate contract in real life, the Chin Music owner has 72 hours to decide on which contract they want. If no decision is made within 72 hours, the original contract (not the new one signed in real life) stands. It is possible that the 27 hour decision window runs past opening day (i.e. tagged player X signs his extension opening day eve, Chin Music owner will still have 72 hours to choose)"
We are aware that this has come up once or twice before in the history of this league, however we use a case by case basis to determine the rules in the margin sometimes. This has become a potential franchise altering decision now that we felt really thinking through a bulletproof rule and getting it on the books was needed.
