If he hits even a little bit hot to start the year Boston is going to love Turner. Big red beard. Weird personality. Match made in heaven.
Unless he sucks, in which case Chaim Bloom will take the blame.

Finally decided to pick up 1B. Got 2. only kind of like one of them. Not hating my draft but its definitely shaping up different than all my others.

Hey Cubbie. You need 1st Base.
Speaking of 1st Base. Reminds me of the first time i got to 1st base. We were 12. Her name was Amy. She was so flat, when she took her t-shirt off she had to run around in the shower for her chest to get wet.
It was great.

Picked up Kolten Wong and Mancini here. Wong was the last 2b I see as a certain starter. All others have platoon/bench risk. Got Mancini to round out my 1B. Probably another reach but of those 1b left, hes the most likely to hit 25 HR. other than OF, my offense it pretty set. Going to focus back on P and pick up an OF if it looks like it will work out.

How much do you upside gamble on the backend vs trying to just get players that get full time ABs?
Also, do people usually target their own backups?

Its a tough call on weighting upside vs playing time. For me, i tend to just go with ABs. As an example, lets look at some SS remaining. In my build here, i may not take a 3rd SS but if it was, id probably looking at the end of the draft at these guys. Listed in most recent ADP:
Oswald Peraza Brandon Crawford Royce Lewis Elvis Andrus Anthony Volpe Elly De La Cruz
I would rank them like this:
Elvis - named starting 2b. This ADP doesnt reflect that. I may actually take him if he falls low enough. Did well in 2nd half, good lineup, good ballpark. Crawford - not good but has the job and no one on 40 man really knocking on the door (that i know of) Peraza - young, upside, on 40 man/MLB Success in small sample big gap De La Cruz - great up side, on 40 man. but no high minors - could see June/July or 0 MLB ABs. I'll have 0 shares this year. Royce Lewis - out till June/July - even then not sure if starter/bench/platoon huge gap Volpe - I basically dont draft anyone not on 40 mans. Occasionally some guys get lucky on these players but odds are against you.
As for taking backups, i sometimes do with pitchers. Ive done it this year w/ SFG starters - if im taking Stripling/AWood I may be inclined to also take Descalfani. I dont go seeking it though but some drafts Descalfani is not taken so if its between him as my last pitcher or someone like Daivd Peterson NYM, I'll take Descalfani. Both need something to break for them to get the job so you might as well have Descalfani in this case. In general, you want all position get points, any points so i tend not to draft minors/backups to my other players.

For backups it seems like catching would be the best spot for that. If you draft Zunino, grab Naylor/Lavastida super late and promise yourself catching every day.

If you do 3 catchers, sure. I wouldnt do that with only 2. I try to do only 2 Cs since its a wasteland and all perform relatively equally in that lower tier range.

Picked up Diaz and Fraley. Usually dont pick closers, especially unproven ones but they came out and named Diaz the closer. Seemed like good value, hope he holds on to it. Needed some OF help - Fraley plays in CIN, works for me.

PIcked up some boring innings in wacha. Good Team, hoping for some Ws. Bias pick of Marsh since i have him in this leauge. also saw he batted leadoff in the spring training opener. I expect Turner to leadoff going forward but good to see maybe Marsh will leadoff once in a while and possibly boost his value. Forgot that i took ALexis Diaz so these picks of Bednar and Barlow are kind of risky. I dont really like taking Closers but these could pay off huge. 300+ points this late in the draft would be amazing. THat said, if these closers get pusehd off this role im screwing myself over. Im liking the OF options remaining so will probably go with boring SP next couple rounds.

Another auto pick, this one much worse. Another closer and this one while could have highest upside of my closers, definitely has the lowest downside (health/role). We'll see. Just need two more to sign up for our league and i promise i'll stop with these updates.

Here are the latest picks. Kikuchi looked good in 2IP the other day so i got that going for me! If hes back that would be huge but this time of the draft, even if he repeats last years 200pt, it should be fine. I spent like an hour on my last 2B pick. Ended with Schoop bc of presumed playing time and batting order even though there we some more exciting guys there (Massey, Rodolfo Castro, Gorman). Picked up Isbel as he seems to be the starter due to Waters injury. Grossman has been undrafted in all my previous drafts but he signed an MLB deal so we'll see. Here's the current roster. Likely to use that 3rd SS spot for an extra OF of P. May actually go with 3 Cs if 2 of the 4 Cs i like are still on the board. That said, not a fan of my pitching staff as a whole, mainly due to that Munoz pick. May have to grab and extra P and OF leaving only 2 Cs and 2 SS. C Rutchmann C C 1B Brown 1B Belt 1B Mancini 2B Semien 2B Wong 2B Schoop 3B Chapman 3B Turner 3B SS TTurner SS TAnderson SS OF Trout OF AdGarcia OF Kwan OF Benintendi OF Fraley OF Marsh OF Isbel OF Grossman OF P DeGrom P Urias P Luzardo P Singer P JGray P Berrios P Sandoval P Urquidy P ADiaz P Wacha P Bednar P Barlow P Cueto P AMunoz P Kikuchi P

Heres how i finished the draft and the final roster. Jumped on the spring training Will Benson hype train. Lets hope for injuries in CIN so he can get some ABs. Strange how i pretty much like almost every CIN hitter, top 3 SP and closer this year for fantasy and in RL but they are expected to be shit. Another high risk high reward with Alek Thomas. 2 more high risk, medium reward closers in Lange & May. Position by position: C - not very happy with this duo. Not that i dont think they'll perform but i think C is deep this year and i didnt need to pay up for Rutch. 1B - 3 starters for now but i can easily see belt be injured, Brown traded to a contender as a bench bat and Mancini being mediocre. 2B Loved Semien & thought i got great value for Wong, even knowing he'll be worse this year compared to last just due to ballpark. Kinda hate the Schoop pick now. 3B i really like my picks here. I have Chapman and Turner on most of by best balls this year - really banking on them. Wisdom as a possible 20-25 HR guy in the 35th round, ill take it. SS - Risky since its only 2 but as long as their both not injured at the same time, i should be good. OF - im moved to mainly drafting 10 rather than 9 (5 score each week). I wait on OF usually and have to take an extra guy due to the playing time questions when waiting this long in the draft. I can see taking some 0s out the OF spot which is never good. For pitching, its always risky due to injuries but man i went risky with this draft. Degrom, Luzardo, Berrios and all the closers. Hoping to get boring steady points from Urias, Gray, Sandoval, Urquidy, Wacha & Cueto and praying for health/roles out of the more risky guys. C Rutchmann C EDiaz 1B Brown 1B Belt 1B Mancini 2B Semien 2B Wong 2B Schoop 3B Chapman 3B Turner 3B Wisdom SS TTurner SS TAnderson OF Trout OF AdGarcia OF Kwan OF Benintendi OF Fraley OF Marsh OF Isbel OF Grossman OF Benson OF AThomas P DeGrom P Urias P Luzardo P Singer P JGray P Berrios P Sandoval P Urquidy P ADiaz P Wacha P Bednar P Barlow P Cueto P AMunoz P Kikuchi P Lange P TMay BTW - i just started another best ball draft but its a little bit different. Instead of 12 teams like the above, its 30. and instead for 40 rounds its 50. Its a 5 year dynasty best ball. You keep the players you draft for 5 years and each offseason there is a supplemental 10 round draft for pop up prospects. In this intial draft, you can draft anyone - high schoolers, people in Japan/KBO etc hoping they will contribute in the next 5 years. I wont bore everyone with that draft but man its crazy.

You really only messed up on OF. Drafting only 6 when 5 need to put up points each week is extremely risky.
